Fernandes Breaks Assist Record as Carrick’s United Finish in Style

Bruno Fernandes capped an extraordinary individual season by breaking the Premier League’s single-season assist record before adding a goal of his own as Manchester United defeated Brighton in Michael Carrick’s first match as permanent manager.

The Portugal midfielder, already crowned Premier League Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, moved clear of Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne in the assist charts when Patrick Dorgu powered home his first-half corner.

Fernandes later got on the scoresheet himself as United wrapped up another impressive win under Carrick, whose side secured Champions League qualification with room to spare after a remarkable turnaround since January.

For Brighton, the day ended with mixed emotions.

Although Fabian Hurzeler’s side were beaten at home, Brentford’s failure to win at Anfield ensured the Seagulls held onto eighth place and secured qualification for next season’s Europa Conference League.

Supporters inside the Amex Stadium initially reacted with frustration after a flat performance, but celebrations eventually erupted once confirmation arrived that European football had been secured for only the second time in the club’s history.

United, however, cared little for Brighton’s relief as they celebrated Carrick’s latest success.

The victory was his 12th in 17 matches since taking interim charge following Ruben Amorim’s departure earlier in the season - form convincing enough to earn him the role permanently.

Fernandes and United finish strongly

Manchester United started brightly and took control through Fernandes’ historic assist.

The midfielder’s pinpoint corner was emphatically converted by Patrick Dorgu, giving United the lead and handing Fernandes the outright Premier League assist record.

United continued to threaten and doubled their advantage through Bryan Mbeumo after a slick one-two between Amad Diallo and Mason Mount carved Brighton apart.

Just three minutes into the second half, Fernandes added a goal to his record-breaking afternoon with a powerful finish to put the result beyond doubt.

The performance underlined the transformation Carrick has overseen since taking charge, guiding United from uncertainty in mid-table to a comfortable top-four finish and a return to the Champions League after two seasons away.

Carrick’s next challenge begins

Carrick’s calm leadership style has played a major role in United’s revival.

Unlike predecessor Ruben Amorim, he has avoided public criticism of his players while restoring confidence within the squad.

He has also shown a willingness to trust youth, handing opportunities to academy talents and reintegrating players such as Kobbie Mainoo into the starting side.

Most importantly, though, Carrick has consistently delivered results.

From a statement win over Manchester City earlier in his tenure to this final-day victory at Brighton, United found momentum under his guidance and rarely let it slip.

Attention now turns to strengthening the squad ahead of a demanding campaign that will include Champions League football alongside domestic competitions.

Central midfield remains the club’s priority area in the transfer market, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson reportedly among the key targets.

United are also understood to be interested in Atalanta midfielder Ederson, while West Ham’s relegation could make Portugal international Mateus Fernandes a more affordable option this summer.

Carrick has done his part by stabilising the club and delivering Champions League qualification.

The focus now shifts to whether the recruitment department can provide the depth and quality needed to build on that progress.

Brighton celebrate another European adventure

Despite the disappointment of defeat, Brighton still ended the day with plenty to celebrate.

Conference League qualification may not satisfy every Premier League club, but for Brighton it represents another remarkable chapter in their rise.

Just a few months ago, concerns over relegation surrounded the club following a difficult run of form. Instead, they now head back into European competition.

Captain Lewis Dunk reflected the mood after full-time, reminding supporters how far the club has come during the post-match lap of honour.

Crystal Palace’s run to the Conference League final has also provided extra motivation for Brighton as they prepare for another continental campaign under Hurzeler, who recently committed his future by signing a new three-year contract.

For a club that once battled simply to survive financially, another season in Europe is a sign of how dramatically Brighton’s fortunes have changed.
