Barcelona Seal £69m Anthony Gordon Transfer as Newcastle Prepare Major Rebuild

Barcelona have reached an agreement worth more than £69 million with Newcastle United for England winger Anthony Gordon, bringing one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas close to completion.

BBC Sport had previously reported that talks between the two clubs were progressing positively, and Barca have now secured a deal valued at over 80 million euros (£69.3m).

Gordon is expected to complete the final formalities of the transfer before linking up with the England squad for their pre-World Cup training camp in the United States.

Bayern Munich were also in discussions with Newcastle over the 24-year-old, but the Bundesliga giants failed to meet the Premier League club’s valuation. Barcelona ultimately tabled the offer Newcastle were prepared to accept.

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson had made it clear earlier this year that any player sales would happen strictly on the club’s terms, and the Magpies were well-positioned to demand a premium fee for Gordon, whose contract runs until 2030.

The sale comes as Newcastle look to reshape their squad following a disappointing 12th-place Premier League finish. Gordon’s departure will provide significant funds for reinvestment during the summer transfer window, even after accounting for Everton’s sell-on clause.

Everton are set to receive 15% of the profit Newcastle make on Gordon after selling the academy graduate in a deal worth up to £45 million in 2023.

Despite being one of Newcastle’s standout performers and top scorer, Gordon had increasingly looked the most likely high-profile exit this summer. Head coach Eddie Howe notably left him on the bench for the final four matches of the season, signalling the club’s long-term planning.

Newcastle supporters appeared to sense the end was near, chanting Gordon’s name during the closing stages of the 2-0 defeat at Fulham on the final day of the campaign.

Newcastle Change Transfer Strategy After Isak Exit

Gordon’s impending move means Newcastle are set to lose their leading scorer for the second consecutive summer after the controversial departure of Alexander Isak to Liverpool last year.

However, the club’s handling of Gordon’s transfer reflects a clear shift in approach.

Last summer, Newcastle endured a difficult period without a fully established executive structure, eventually selling Isak for a British-record £125 million on deadline day after initially resisting Liverpool’s interest.

The arrivals of chief executive David Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson have since brought greater stability and direction behind the scenes.

While former chief executive Darren Eales once insisted it would be “crazy” to sell Newcastle’s best players, Hopkinson has adopted a more pragmatic stance, stressing the importance of maximising transfer value when opportunities arise.

Rather than reluctantly parting with key talent, Newcastle now view Gordon’s sale as a strategic move to refresh and strengthen a struggling squad.

There had already been signs the club were preparing for life without him. Although Howe repeatedly praised Gordon’s professionalism in training, the winger spent recent weeks on the sidelines, with youngsters Sean Neave and Alex Murphy even being introduced ahead of him during the defeat at Fulham.

That decision ultimately proved a telling indication of what was to come.
