Sterling Arrested Following M3 Crash Investigation

Former England international Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a crash involving a Lamborghini on the M3 motorway in Hampshire.

Police were called shortly before 9am on Thursday after reports that the luxury vehicle had collided with motorway barriers near the Minley Interchange on the southbound carriageway.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident and no injuries were reported.

The 31-year-old, who recently spent the second half of the season with Dutch side Feyenoord, was subsequently arrested and later released on bail while investigations continue.

In a statement, Hampshire Police confirmed: "Just before 9am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange.

"No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

"The driver, a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen."

"He has been bailed while our enquiries continue."

A source close to Sterling acknowledged the arrest but maintained there was currently "no proof" that drugs were present in his system.

The source also described the past few years as particularly difficult for the player, claiming he had been made to feel "worthless" and "forgotten about" during a challenging period in his career.

Sterling joined Feyenoord in February on a short-term deal after leaving Chelsea during the January transfer window.

However, his spell in the Netherlands was limited to just eight appearances.

His departure from Chelsea came after both parties agreed to terminate the final 18 months of his contract, which was reportedly worth more than £300,000 per week.

Sterling had joined the Blues from Manchester City in 2022 but made only 59 Premier League appearances across four seasons, including a loan spell at Arsenal.

The winger enjoyed the most successful period of his club career at Manchester City, winning four Premier League titles after moving from Liverpool in 2015.

Internationally, Sterling earned 82 caps for England and was a key figure in the national team for several years, with his most recent appearance coming during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Investigations into Thursday's incident remain ongoing.
