Wales’ long wait for an away friendly victory continued as they were beaten 2-1 by Romania in Bucharest.
Craig Bellamy’s side made an encouraging start and controlled much of the early possession, but they were unable to turn their dominance into goals.
Ethan Ampadu, Brennan Johnson and Kieffer Moore all had chances before Romania grew into the contest.
The hosts thought they had taken the lead in the first half when Louis Munteanu fired a powerful strike past Danny Ward, only for the effort to be wrongly ruled out for offside.
Ward later made amends for an error by tipping over another Munteanu attempt, while Nicolae Stanciu curled a free-kick narrowly wide before the break.
Romania eventually made their pressure count in the second half.
Substitute Florinel Coman, introduced by Gheorghe Hagi, found space inside the area and calmly finished beyond Ward to put the home side ahead.
Wales responded through a substitute of their own as David Brooks levelled just three minutes after coming on.
Daniel James drove down the left and delivered a fine cross to the back post, where Brooks volleyed in his seventh international goal.
Bellamy’s team pushed for a winner after drawing level, with Lewis Koumas and Cameron Congreve both denied by Romania goalkeeper Stefan Tarnovanu.
But Romania struck late to claim victory. Adrian Rus met David Matei’s cross and headed into the net, restoring the home side’s lead and leaving Wales with too little time to respond.
Matei almost added another when he struck the post, before Koumas was denied a dramatic equaliser as Rus blocked his goalbound effort in stoppage time.
The result means Wales are now without a win in 17 away friendlies, a run stretching back to November 2008, when Bellamy scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Denmark.
Both Wales and Romania will now turn their attention to the Nations League, which begins in September, after both sides suffered World Cup play-off disappointment.
