Portugal secured a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in a World Cup warm-up match on Wednesday, with Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceicao scoring to spare Cristiano Ronaldo’s blushes in Leiria.
Chelsea forward Neto gave Portugal the lead midway through the first half, but Nigeria responded before halftime through Akor Adams to level the match.
Juventus winger Conceicao restored Portugal’s advantage with 15 minutes remaining, sealing the win for Roberto Martinez’s side despite Ronaldo missing several promising chances.
The 41-year-old forward is set to feature at a record sixth World Cup, but questions remain over whether his role in the team could limit the impact of Portugal’s talented squad.
Martinez had his full squad available following the arrival of the four players who won the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain. He started Vitinha and Joao Neves in midfield alongside Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes.
Portugal will leave on Friday to set up their World Cup base camp in Palm Beach, Florida.
They begin their tournament on 17 June in Houston against the Democratic Republic of Congo, before facing Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.
