Room’s Heroics Earn Curacao Historic First World Cup Point

What looked destined to be a routine Ecuador victory quickly turned into one of the most remarkable goalkeeping displays in World Cup history as Curacao held their higher-ranked opponents to a memorable 0-0 draw.

Just three minutes into the match, Ecuador captain Enner Valencia burst through on goal and seemed certain to score.

With only goalkeeper Eloy Room to beat from close range, an early breakthrough appeared inevitable and threatened to set the tone for another difficult night for Curacao following their 7-1 defeat to Germany in their tournament opener.

Instead, Room produced a stunning save, diving low to his left to push Valencia’s effort around the post. It proved to be the first of many.

The 37-year-old Miami FC goalkeeper delivered a record-equalling performance, making 15 saves to preserve a clean sheet and secure Curacao’s first-ever World Cup point.

According to Opta, no goalkeeper has made more saves in a 90-minute World Cup match since records began in 1966.

Only former United States goalkeeper Tim Howard matched that total against Belgium in 2014, although Howard conceded twice in extra time, while Room kept Ecuador scoreless throughout.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown was full of praise for the Curacao shot-stopper.

“Take a bow, Room. Absolutely magnificent,” Keown said on BBC One.

“You almost needed a calculator to count the saves."

"It became a shopping list of stops. His reactions were outstanding and he looked destined to keep a clean sheet.”

Room himself joked after the match that Howard would have been “sweating at home” while watching and suggested his display might warrant “a statue in Curacao.”

From Qualification Hero to World Cup Legend

Curacao’s presence at the World Cup owes much to Room’s contributions.

The Dutch-born goalkeeper made a crucial save in a goalless draw against Jamaica last November that secured qualification for the Caribbean nation.

Former Netherlands striker Patrick Kluivert, who managed Curacao in 2015, convinced Room to represent the country of his father’s birth after his time with the Dutch youth teams.

Born in Nijmegen, Room enjoyed a successful career in the Netherlands, making more than 200 Eredivisie appearances and winning league and cup honours with PSV Eindhoven and Vitesse before moving to Major League Soccer with Columbus Crew in 2019.

After helping Columbus win the MLS Cup in 2020 and earning the league’s Save of the Season award, Room eventually joined Miami FC in the United States second tier.

A keen padel player who credits the sport for sharpening his reflexes, Room had never made more than five saves in a league game for Miami FC this season.

Yet in front of 68,598 spectators at Kansas City Stadium, he faced 27 Ecuador shots and denied opponents who generated an expected goals figure of 3.05.

“I still have to process it myself,” Room said.

“The match was full of emotions."

"The first save set the tone, not just for me but for the whole team."

"It gave us confidence and we grew into the game together.

“We kept fighting until the very end. To earn a point for Curacao this way is something special.”

A Landmark Result for a Tiny Nation

Room’s heroics helped Curacao make history in their debut World Cup campaign.

After suffering a heavy defeat against Germany, few expected Dick Advocaat’s side to take anything from a match against Ecuador, a team ranked more than 50 places above them in the FIFA standings.

With a population of around 156,000 and a land area smaller than the Isle of Man, Curacao is the smallest nation ever to compete at a World Cup.

The island, a self-governing country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, even had King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima in attendance to witness the achievement.

The draw marked only the third occasion that a nation ranked 80th or lower in FIFA’s rankings has earned a point at a World Cup. Curacao entered the match ranked 82nd in the world.

“This evening is all about Curacao and what they have achieved,” Keown added.

“For them, it will feel like a victory. They haven’t come here just to make up the numbers. This is an outstanding result.”

Curacao now head into their final Group E match against Ivory Coast with hope still alive.

A shock victory could send them through to the last 32.

Regardless of what happens next, Room’s record-equalling display and Curacao’s historic first World Cup point have already secured their place in football folklore.
