Yamal Shines as Spain Cruise Past Saudi Arabia

Lamine Yamal marked his first World Cup start with a goal as Spain secured their first victory of the tournament with an emphatic 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Group H.

After being held to a frustrating goalless draw by Cape Verde in their opening match, Spain made a flying start and were ahead inside 10 minutes.

Mikel Oyarzabal's low cross evaded the Saudi defence and found Yamal at the far post, where the Barcelona teenager tapped home to make history as only the second player aged 18 or younger to score the opening goal in a World Cup match after Pele in 1958.

Spain continued to dominate and doubled their lead when Oyarzabal pounced after Saudi Arabia failed to clear a corner, firing past goalkeeper Mohammad Al-Owais.

The Real Sociedad forward struck again just three minutes later, sweeping home Dani Olmo's clever flick to put Spain firmly in control before half-time.

Oyarzabal nearly completed a hat-trick before the break but saw his effort crash against the crossbar after intercepting a misplaced pass from Al-Owais.

Despite withdrawing both Yamal and Oyarzabal at half-time, Spain maintained complete control after the restart.

Marc Cucurella's powerful shot was initially saved by Al-Owais, but the rebound struck defender Hassan Al Tambakti and rolled into the net for an own goal that made it 4-0.

With the result beyond doubt, Spain eased off in the closing stages, although substitute Ferran Torres came close to adding a fifth before later seeing a goal ruled out for offside following a lengthy VAR review.

Saudi Arabia rarely threatened throughout the contest, with Abdullah Al Hamdan registering their only shot on target late in the game.

Spain Find Their Rhythm

After their disappointing draw against Cape Verde, Spain produced the response expected of the European champions.

Yamal's lively display set the tone, while Oyarzabal delivered a masterclass in attacking efficiency with two goals and an assist in a dominant first-half performance.

Spain peppered the Saudi goal with 17 attempts before the interval and could easily have extended their advantage further.

Their four-goal lead shortly after half-time accurately reflected the gulf between the two sides.

The victory lifts Spain to the top of Group H on four points and leaves them well placed to reach the knockout stage ahead of their final group match against Uruguay.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, must now seek a positive result against Cape Verde in their final fixture if they are to avoid another group-stage exit.
