New Zealand and Belgium Face Win-or-Go-Home Clash in Crucial World Cup Showdown

New Zealand and Belgium will battle for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stages when they meet in a decisive Group G encounter at BC Place in Vancouver on Saturday, 27 June. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00am CAT.

Form Guide

New Zealand have endured a frustrating start to the tournament despite showing attacking promise. The All Whites drew 2-2 with Iran in Los Angeles before suffering a 3-1 defeat to Egypt in Vancouver. Remarkably, they have taken the lead three times across their opening two matches but have managed just one point, leaving them rooted to the bottom of Group G.

Belgium have also failed to meet expectations. The Red Devils opened with a 1-1 draw against Egypt in Seattle before being held to a goalless draw by Iran in Los Angeles. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Belgium's only goal of the tournament came courtesy of an own goal from Egypt defender Mohamed Hany.

Belgium's attacking struggles stretch back even further, with the last World Cup goal scored by a Belgian player coming from Michy Batshuayi in a 1-0 victory over Canada during the 2022 group stage.

Rudi Garcia's side will also be without defender Nathan Ngoy, who serves a suspension after being sent off against Iran.

The qualification scenario is straightforward. New Zealand must win to reach the Round of 32, while Belgium could advance with a draw if group leaders Egypt defeat Iran in the other Group G fixture taking place simultaneously in Seattle.

What They're Saying

Elijah Just, New Zealand forward

"You can look at it one way, where the draws are maybe not so flattering to Belgium when they're probably favourites to get out of the group. At the same time, we know how hungry they're going to be; they need to beat us to get out of the group, so we're definitely not underestimating them because of the draws."

Rudi Garcia, Belgium head coach

"Sometimes you have to win and in this situation you have to win. Obviously, I would have wished to start better, but this is part of life. This group is not weak. We need to show we are capable of beating New Zealand and moving into the Round of 32. First, we need to rest, recover and get ready for this decisive match."

Players to Watch

New Zealand – Elijah Just

The 26-year-old winger starred in New Zealand's tournament opener, scoring both goals in the 2-2 draw against Iran. Although he found opportunities harder to come by against Egypt, Just's pace on the counterattack could prove vital as the All Whites chase a historic victory.

Belgium – Leandro Trossard

The Arsenal winger was one of Belgium's brightest performers against Iran, consistently troubling defenders with his dribbling and movement. If Trossard can unlock New Zealand's defence, Belgium will fancy their chances of securing the result they need.

Head-to-Head

Saturday's clash will mark the first-ever meeting between New Zealand and Belgium in men's senior international football.
