Five Panama Players England Must Watch at the World Cup

Panama head into their final World Cup group match against England with pride as their only motivation after suffering early elimination from the tournament.

The Central Americans are at risk of repeating their 2018 World Cup campaign, when they lost all three group matches, including a heavy 6-1 defeat to England.

Another loss would also see Panama equal the longest 100% losing streak in World Cup history with six consecutive defeats.

Despite the disappointing campaign, Panama boast the oldest and most experienced squad at this year's tournament, and several players still have the quality to trouble England.

Adalberto 'Coco' Carrasquilla

Club: UNAM (Mexico) Age: 27 Position: Midfielder

Panama's creative heartbeat, Carrasquilla has yet to feature at the World Cup after suffering a thigh injury during the Mexican league final in May.

However, he is expected to return against England.

A gifted central midfielder, Carrasquilla dictates the tempo, links play and excels at carrying the ball through midfield under pressure.

His influence was recognised in 2024 when he became the first Panamanian to win the Concacaf Men's Player of the Year award.

Away from football, Carrasquilla trained as a hairdresser and still enjoys cutting friends' and family members' hair when back home.

He has also jokingly vowed to shave off his trademark curls should Panama somehow lift the World Cup.

Jose Cordoba

Club: Norwich City Age: 25 Position: Centre-back

Cordoba has developed into one of Panama's defensive leaders after establishing himself at Norwich City under Philippe Clement.

The left-footed defender scored his first international goal earlier this year in a victory over South Africa and has become renowned for his strength, pace and ability to recover possession.

During the 2025-26 Championship season, he averaged more ball recoveries per 90 minutes than any centre-back who played at least 750 minutes.

Nicknamed the "Prince of Panama" by Norwich supporters, Cordoba could play a vital role in containing England's attack.

Cristian Martinez

Club: Kiryat Shmona (Israel) Age: 29 Position: Midfielder

Known as "El Fulo" because of his distinctive blond hair, Martinez has been one of Panama's standout performers despite the team's struggles.

His tireless display against Croatia earned him FIFA's Man of the Match award, making him the first Panamanian player to receive the honour at a World Cup.

Having reinvented himself from an attacking midfielder into a deeper central role during his career, Martinez has rediscovered his attacking instincts at this tournament.

After unsuccessful spells in the United States and Spain, he has rebuilt his career in Israel.

Michael Amir Murillo

Club: Besiktas Age: 30 Position: Wing-back

Murillo remains one of Panama's most experienced internationals and has been a regular in the national side for the past decade.

After leaving Marseille midway through last season to join Turkish club Besiktas, the attacking full-back continues to be one of Panama's biggest threats going forward.

He also featured against England during the 2018 World Cup.

Raised in difficult circumstances in the city of Colon, Murillo credits his mentality for helping him overcome adversity after growing up supporting his mother and five siblings.

Cecilio Waterman

Club: Universidad de Concepcion (Chile)Age: 35Position: Forward

Veteran striker Cecilio Waterman remains one of Panama's most experienced attacking options.

He made headlines last year when he celebrated a dramatic winner against the United States by embracing football legend Thierry Henry during a live television broadcast.

Waterman has also attracted attention ahead of the England match after an animated disagreement with team-mate Jose Luis Rodriguez during training, although head coach Thomas Christiansen dismissed the incident as nothing serious.

After spending six years out of the national team earlier in his career, the 35-year-old has re-established himself as an important squad member and will battle Jose Fajardo for a place in the starting line-up.

While Panama have little left to play for beyond pride, these five players possess the experience and quality to ensure England cannot afford to underestimate their final Group L opponents.
