Sunderland Reject Chelsea Interest in Granit Xhaka

Sunderland have made it clear that Granit Xhaka is not for sale after Chelsea opened discussions with the midfielder's representatives over a possible summer transfer.

The 33-year-old Switzerland international remains under contract until 2028 and was instrumental in Sunderland's impressive campaign, helping the club secure a Europa League place under manager Regis Le Bris.

While Chelsea have made contact with Xhaka's camp, no agreement has been reached over personal terms.

However, the experienced midfielder is believed to be open to a reunion with former Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, who is now in charge at Stamford Bridge after the pair won the Bundesliga together in 2024.

Despite the interest, Sunderland are determined to keep one of their most influential players.

Club sources insist there is no financial pressure to sell following their return to European competition, and they have no intention of allowing Xhaka to leave.

The former Arsenal captain missed just four Premier League matches last season and earned widespread praise for his leadership both on and off the pitch as Sunderland finished seventh to qualify for the Europa League - ironically at Chelsea's expense on the final day of the campaign.

Chelsea Eye Experience

A move for Xhaka would represent a significant change in Chelsea's recent recruitment strategy.

The London club have fielded the youngest squad in the Premier League over the past two seasons and have not selected a player aged 30 or older during that period.

Xhaka, who turns 34 in September, would bring experience and leadership that many within the club believe has been lacking.

Senior figures at Chelsea, including co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali, are understood to accept that changes are needed to improve both recruitment and dressing-room culture.

Midfield remains a priority position this summer, particularly with speculation continuing to surround Enzo Fernandez.

Although Chelsea have not received a formal bid, the Argentina international is valued at around £120 million, with reports in Spain suggesting Real Madrid are seriously considering a move.

Club president Florentino Perez and new head coach Jose Mourinho are both believed to support the transfer.

Chelsea are also close to signing Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra, while several first-team players - including Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Malo Gusto, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo - face uncertain futures.

Defender Marc Cucurella has already completed a move to Real Madrid as Chelsea continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new season.
