FIFA delivers a blow to the French national team

8 July 2026

France coach Didier Deschamps announced that FIFA has officially rejected the request to overturn the yellow card received by Les Bleus star Michael Olise during the match against Paraguay.

The French star received the yellow card during the Round of 16 match against Paraguay in the 2026 World Cup, which Les Bleus won 1-0.

French sources quoted Deschamps as saying: "The yellow card has not been rescinded. We received official notification from FIFA about this this morning."

This came after reports confirmed that the French Football Federation had submitted a formal request to have the yellow card rescinded to spare Olise the threat of suspension.

This decision puts the French star under considerable pressure. If he receives another yellow card in tonights quarter-final match against Morocco, he will be automatically suspended for the semi-final should France qualify.

The 24-year-old Olissei, who has been shining for Bayern Munich since joining them in the summer of 2014 from Crystal Palace, is one of Deschamps' key players. He currently leads the World Cup in assists with five.
