Strasbourg Appoint Hugo Oliveira as New Head Coach

Strasbourg have confirmed the appointment of Portuguese coach Hugo Oliveira as their new head coach following the departure of Gary O'Neil last month.

The Ligue 1 club moved quickly to fill the vacancy after O'Neil left on 26 June to take charge of Ipswich, just six months after arriving in Alsace.

Oliveira, 47, joins Strasbourg from Portuguese side Famalicao, where he impressed during his first spell as a senior head coach.

The French club did not disclose the length of his contract.

"It's an honour to be here in Strasbourg and to join such a great project," Oliveira said after his appointment.

"I want to bring emotion, create memories and give everything I have to help this club continue to grow."

Before stepping into management, Oliveira built a strong reputation as a goalkeeping coach, working with Portugal's national team as well as Premier League clubs Everton and Fulham alongside Marco Silva.

He took charge of Famalicao in December 2024 and guided the club to a fifth-place finish in the Primeira Liga last season - their highest league position since returning to Portugal's top flight six years ago.

Oliveira inherits a Strasbourg side that enjoyed an impressive campaign under O'Neil, reaching the UEFA Conference League semi-finals while finishing eighth in Ligue 1.

His first competitive match in charge will come on the opening weekend of the new Ligue 1 season, when Strasbourg travel to face Marseille between 21 and 23 August.
