Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans, with negotiations understood to be at an advanced stage as the club looks to strengthen its midfield ahead of the new season.
United have made reinforcing the centre of the park a top priority this summer but have faced setbacks after missing out on Elliot Anderson, who is set to join Manchester City, and Mateus Fernandes, who chose Tottenham Hotspur over a move from West Ham United.
The Red Devils had also agreed a £35 million deal with Atalanta for Brazil international Ederson, but that transfer has now been put on hold.
Meanwhile, Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos has reportedly completed his medical ahead of a £48 million move, with further additions expected before the transfer window closes.
Currently, Kobbie Mainoo remains United's only experienced natural central midfielder, although the England international has yet to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to BBC Sport, Tielemans' Aston Villa contract includes a release clause, simplifying negotiations, and an agreement is now believed to be close.
The 29-year-old Belgium international has long been admired by United, with his extensive Premier League experience viewed as a major asset.
Tielemans played a key role in Belgium's run to the World Cup quarter-finals, but missed the 2-1 defeat to Spain after suffering an injury during the pre-match warm-up.
Manchester United's proposed move for Ederson has stalled following concerns raised during the midfielder's medical assessment.
Reports initially suggested the deal was in jeopardy because of a knee issue, and further examinations confirmed United's concerns.
The 27-year-old travelled to England for additional tests after preliminary checks in the United States highlighted a potential problem following Brazil's Round of 16 exit to Norway. Specialists were consulted before United decided to withdraw from the deal.
Sources indicate the transfer could still be revived later in the summer if circumstances change, although United are unlikely to revisit the agreement on the previously negotiated terms.
Club officials are said to sympathise with the player but believe the decision was necessary to protect the club's long-term interests.
United have also stressed that their move for Andrey Santos, whose arrival is expected to be confirmed this week, is not related to the collapse of the Ederson deal.
