Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of Pep Chavarría from Rayo Vallecano, with a deal worth £16.3 million plus add-ons nearing completion.
The Blues have already agreed personal terms with the 28-year-old left-back, and all parties are increasingly confident that an agreement between the clubs will soon be finalised.
Chavarría has emerged as a priority signing for Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso, who came up against the Spanish defender during his time in charge of Real Madrid last season.
Chelsea first opened talks with Rayo Vallecano at the end of June, but an initial £15 million offer was rejected.
Negotiations dragged on as Chelsea grew frustrated with Rayo's increasing valuation of the player, with the La Liga club reportedly demanding as much as his £42.8 million release clause at one stage.
Despite the lengthy discussions, Chavarría made it clear to Rayo Vallecano that his preferred destination was Stamford Bridge.
The Spaniard's arrival would provide Alonso with another important piece in the tactical system that brought him Bundesliga success with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024.
Alongside new right-back Marco Palestra, who joined from Atalanta in July for £47 million, Chavarría would strengthen Chelsea's wing-back options ahead of the new season.
He also fills the gap left by Marc Cucurella, who completed a £51.8 million move to Real Madrid in June.
Chelsea's summer recruitment has blended experience with marquee additions.
Veteran striker Danny Welbeck, 35, arrived from Brighton, while Jordan Henderson, 36, joined after terminating his contract with Brentford.
The club also completed a club-record £117 million move for Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, signed defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million, and are expected to confirm the arrival of midfielder Valentin Barco from partner club Strasbourg in the coming days.
With Chavarría's move close to completion, Chelsea are expected to turn their attention to outgoing transfers.
The club has already agreed a deal worth around £31 million to sell defender Trevoh Chalobah to Italian side Como 1907, with further departures anticipated before the transfer window closes.
