Liverpool's first pre-season under new manager Andoni Iraola has delivered mixed results, but the emergence of 18-year-old defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe has given Reds supporters an exciting glimpse of the future.
Liverpool have won two and lost two of their four pre-season friendlies, beating Sunderland and Wrexham before surrendering two-goal leads in defeats by Leeds United and Monaco.
Injuries and absences in central defence have created an unexpected opportunity for Ndukwe, and the 6ft 6in (1.98m) Austrian teenager has taken full advantage.
Joe Gomez suffered an injury in Liverpool's opening pre-season match, £60m signing Jeremy Jacquet has been sidelined by a persistent knee issue, while Giovanni Leoni continues his recovery from a serious knee injury.
Those circumstances have handed Ndukwe significant playing time, including two full 90-minute appearances and another 80-minute outing.
His biggest opportunity came against Monaco at Anfield on Sunday, when he started alongside Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.
Ndukwe quickly caught the attention of the home crowd, producing a clever backheel to evade Monaco forward Mika Biereth before impressing in several important defensive duels.
Following the departure of France international Ibrahima Konate, uncertainty remains over who will partner Van Dijk when Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign against Newcastle United.
Despite his impressive pre-season performances, however, Ndukwe cannot be considered.
Post-Brexit work permit regulations prevent Ndukwe from representing Liverpool in competitive matches in 2026 because he has not accumulated enough points to qualify for a UK work permit.
For now, that means the highly rated defender can only represent Liverpool in friendly matches.
Since the United Kingdom left the European Union, English clubs have faced stricter regulations when recruiting overseas players, particularly young prospects without significant senior experience.
Ndukwe, an Austria youth international, currently does not have enough points to receive the Governing Body Endorsement required for a work visa.
There is an alternative route through an Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) place, designed for overseas players who do not meet the standard GBE requirements.
Premier League and Championship clubs can have up to four ESC places, with the number available determined by the percentage of playing time given to England Qualified Players during the previous season.
Clubs that give England Qualified Players at least 35% of available minutes can use four ESC places. Falling below that threshold reduces the number available.
Liverpool's percentage last season means they have only one ESC place, and that has already been allocated to 18-year-old Senegalese player Mor Talla Ndiaye.
Freddie Woodman, Joe Gomez, Rhys Williams, Curtis Jones, Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha were Liverpool's only English players last season, collectively making 83 Premier League appearances.
The situation follows the departures of players including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarell Quansah and Tyler Morton, while Harvey Elliott was sent out on loan.
Ndukwe developed through the Austria Vienna academy before establishing himself with the club's reserve team.
He was included in Austria Vienna's senior squad on several occasions and made one first-team appearance.
His performances for Austria at the Under-17 World Cup in November attracted Liverpool's attention.
The Reds reached an agreement in principle to sign Ndukwe in January, with his £2.6m transfer becoming official this summer after he turned 18.
His impressive pre-season performances have already generated excitement among Liverpool supporters, and he remains eligible to feature in the club's final friendly against Como on 16 August.
Van Dijk has also been impressed by his young defensive partner, describing Ndukwe as a "big talent" following the Monaco match.
"Big talent, big guy and he wants to learn," Van Dijk said.
The Liverpool captain also suggested that a loan move would be the logical next step in Ndukwe's development, allowing him to gain experience before potentially returning to compete for a first-team place.
A decision over Ndukwe's immediate future is expected within the next fortnight, with Liverpool searching for a suitable European loan destination.
His agent, Georg Lederer, previously confirmed that the priority is finding a club where the defender can gain regular playing experience at a high level.
Lederer said several leading international clubs had already expressed concrete interest and confirmed on Monday that discussions over Ndukwe's next destination remain ongoing.
A carefully chosen loan could also solve Liverpool's work permit problem.
Ndukwe needs to accumulate 15 points across several categories to automatically qualify for a visa. The standard of the league in which he plays will be an important factor in determining how quickly he reaches the required total.
With the right loan move, it is understood Ndukwe could secure enough points by January.
That could potentially allow Liverpool to recall the teenager and make him available for competitive matches during the second half of the season.
However, the possibility of Liverpool recalling Ndukwe midway through the campaign could complicate negotiations with clubs interested in taking him on loan.
For now, the teenager's immediate task is to continue making an impression during pre-season. His performances have already demonstrated why Liverpool invested in his potential, even if supporters may have to wait a little longer to see him make his competitive debut.
