La Liga to Inspect Celta Vigo Pitch After Suspected Fungus Outbreak Ahead of Osasuna Clash

La Liga officials are set to inspect the pitch at Celta Vigo's Estadio de Balaidos following a suspected fungus outbreak that has raised doubts over Sunday's season opener against Osasuna.

Celta are scheduled to host Osasuna in their opening match of the 2026-27 La Liga season on Sunday, with kick-off set for 20:30 BST.

Following reports of damage to the playing surface, La Liga officials are expected to visit the 24,870-capacity stadium in Vigo within the next 24 hours to determine whether the fixture can proceed as planned.

The pitch is believed to have been affected by a fungal infection, leaving parts of the surface damaged. Celta Vigo are understood to have requested that the match be postponed.

Osasuna, however, are reportedly willing to play the fixture as scheduled.

Balaidos Pitch Under Scrutiny

The Estadio de Balaidos recently hosted Spain's friendly against Iraq in June, ahead of the national team's successful 2026 World Cup campaign.

The stadium has been undergoing renovation work for more than a decade and is planned to be one of 11 Spanish venues used for the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

Once the redevelopment is completed, the stadium's capacity is expected to increase from its current 24,870 to between 40,000 and 44,000.

Celta Previously Declined Option to Postpone

Celta initially had the option to postpone their opening fixture because striker Borja Iglesias reached the World Cup final with Spain, but the club chose not to do so.

Three other La Liga fixtures scheduled for the opening weekend have already been moved to later in the month because clubs had players involved in the World Cup final.

Those matches are Valencia against Real Betis, Real Madrid against Real Sociedad and Barcelona against Athletic Club.

Attention will now turn to La Liga's inspection of the Balaidos playing surface, which will determine whether Celta Vigo's opening match against Osasuna can go ahead on Sunday night.
