Drey Wright produced a spectacular strike as Dundee claimed an impressive Scottish Premiership derby victory away to Dundee United, extending the hosts’ difficult start to the season.
With Scotland’s five European representatives postponing their league fixtures ahead of their play-off second legs, the Dundee derby was the only Premiership match of the weekend.
In a fast-paced encounter that often lacked quality, Wright provided the standout moment shortly before half-time.
The Dundee full-back capitalised on a loose pass from United midfielder Abdoulaye Yoro before driving forward and unleashing a superb long-range effort that gave the goalkeeper little chance.
Things went from bad to worse for Jim Goodwin’s side after the interval when Dundee doubled their advantage.
Alan Forrest’s untidy effort took a decisive deflection off Owen Bevan and found its way into the net.
Dundee could have added a third when a scramble inside the United penalty area presented Ethan Hamilton with an opportunity, but his effort was kept out by a crucial goal-saving block.
United had started the match brightly and continued searching for a route back into the contest.
However, their promising build-up play was repeatedly undermined by poor decisions and wasteful finishing.
Substitutes Zac Sapsford and Lachlan Rose both sent opportunities wide as the hosts failed to find the goal they desperately needed.
The defeat leaves United without a Premiership victory this season, while they have now gone three consecutive matches in all competitions without scoring.
Dundee United appear to be navigating a period of transition as Goodwin attempts to implement a different playing style following another summer of significant squad changes.
There were encouraging moments in their approach play, but the lack of cutting edge remains a major concern.
United have now failed to score from 46 attempts across their past three matches, highlighting the scale of their attacking problems.
Their frustration increased after the break as Dundee defended superbly, with centre-backs Ryan Astley and Owen Bevan producing commanding performances.
Goalkeeper Owen Goodman was equally impressive.
He reacted well to claw away Vicko Sevelj’s header during the first half before denying Yoro at the near post following the interval.
Dundee’s defensive resilience ensured Wright’s moment of brilliance and their fortunate second goal were enough to secure all three points.
The victory continues an encouraging start to the campaign for Steven Pressley’s team.
With two wins from three demanding opening league fixtures, Dundee have climbed to second place in the Premiership table at this early stage of the season.
Their recent record at Tannadice is also becoming increasingly impressive.
Dundee have now won three of their past four visits to their city rivals, having previously gone 21 years without recording a victory there before 2024.

"We started the game brightly, made a mistake in the middle of the pitch, and then Drey Wright hits an incredible strike. I felt we had a lot of momentum at the start of the second half but then we get the sucker punch from the corner.
"I'm certainly not panicking. I know there's going to be a lot of criticism coming my way and it's deserved but I've still got belief and confidence in the group. I think we're doing a lot of good things during the week but the reality is that needs to come through at the weekend."
Dundee head coach Steven Pressley: "We've come here with a game plan, but we didn't carry out any part of it, to be honest. But what was very apparent in our performance was the grit and determination.
"Sometimes winning away from home is being comfortable with the uncomfortable and we did that at times today. It was a group of players that were determined not to lose that derby and I couldn't be prouder of the players.
"We have to remember we're only three games into it, but I know a derby game is very important for momentum, the feel-good factor and very important for supporters, so I'm a very proud manager tonight."
