Bruno Fernandes scored a superb hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from an early setback to cruise to a 5-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town.
The visitors arrived full of confidence after beating Sunderland on their return to the top flight and took the lead through Leif Davis. Abdul Fatawu produced excellent work on the wing before finding Davis, who finished with an impressive half-volley.
Ipswich threatened to extend their advantage, but the match changed dramatically when Marcelino Nunez slipped as United launched a counter-attack from a corner. Matheus Cunha took advantage and found Fernandes, who calmly converted the equaliser.
United soon completed the turnaround.
Harry Maguire's effort was diverted into the net by Jacob Greaves for an own goal. Although the ball had struck Maguire's arms during the build-up, the goal was allowed because Greaves was credited with the final touch.
Greaves' difficult spell continued just three minutes later when he brought down Cunha inside the penalty area. Fernandes stepped up and converted the resulting spot-kick to give United a 3-1 advantage.
The Portuguese midfielder then completed his hat-trick after Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo both had efforts blocked, reacting quickest to finish the loose ball.
Fernandes was involved again for United's fifth, sending Mbeumo through with a superb pass over the Ipswich defence. The forward's effort struck the crossbar before bouncing over the line.
Ipswich managed a late consolation when Julio Enciso pulled the ball back for substitute Chuba Akpom to score, but the damage had already been done.
Fernandes once again demonstrated his importance to Manchester United with another decisive performance.
The midfielder was named the Professional Footballers' Association men's player of the year earlier this week after registering a Premier League-record 21 assists last season.
He followed that achievement with his third hat-trick for United, taking his overall record to 113 goals in 330 appearances.
Michael Carrick's team desperately needed their captain after falling behind, particularly following their disappointing 2-0 defeat against Hull City in their opening league fixture.
United had been in danger of becoming only the fourth top-flight team to lose their opening two matches of a season against newly promoted opponents.
Instead, Fernandes inspired a dominant response.
United finished with 33 attempts on goal, their highest total in a Premier League match since facing Burnley in October 2016.
Mbeumo could even have added another when he struck the crossbar from close range after being picked out by Marcus Rashford.
Fernandes nearly produced another spectacular moment shortly after completing his hat-trick when he attempted an ambitious effort from the centre circle, only for the ball to land on the roof of the net.
For almost 40 minutes, Ipswich appeared capable of securing a second consecutive Premier League victory.
Gary O'Neil's side started brightly and could have taken the lead earlier when Enciso carried the ball forward from halfway before being denied by goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Davis eventually gave them the advantage after Fatawu beat Luke Shaw on the wing, and the pair almost combined for another goal shortly afterwards.
However, Nunez's unfortunate slip proved to be the turning point.
Once Fernandes equalised, Ipswich quickly lost control of the contest, with Greaves enduring a particularly difficult spell as his own goal and penalty concession came less than three minutes apart.
Their collapse continued after the break, with United completely dominating proceedings.
Ipswich failed to register a shot between the 49th minute and stoppage time, highlighting how dramatically the contest had changed.
Akpom's late goal offered some consolation, but after such a promising opening, Ipswich were ultimately punished heavily by a ruthless United side inspired by their captain.
