Manchester City have agreed a £125 million deal with Chelsea for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez, equalling the British transfer record.
The two Premier League clubs reached an agreement following negotiations over the past 24 hours, with Fernandez now set to undergo a medical before signing a long-term contract at the Etihad Stadium. Personal terms are not expected to present any problems.
The £125m fee matches the British record set when Liverpool signed Alexander Isak for the same amount on transfer deadline day last summer.
Fernandez previously held the British transfer record himself after joining Chelsea from Benfica for £107m in 2023.
The Argentina international is already familiar with City manager Enzo Maresca, having worked under the Italian during his time in charge of Chelsea.
Maresca is keen to reunite with Fernandez after City lost several established midfielders during a dramatic summer of change at the Etihad.
Fernandez was absent from Chelsea's 4-3 Premier League victory over Brighton on Sunday and their 2-0 Carabao Cup win against Luton three days earlier. Reports in Argentina suggested the midfielder had asked to be left out of the squad.
Chelsea had previously set a deadline of 17:00 BST on 14 August for clubs to submit offers worth at least £120m in an attempt to resolve uncertainty surrounding Fernandez before the start of the 2026-27 season.
City's move represents the second time this summer they have broken their own transfer record, having already paid £116m to Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson.
Fernandez will also become the fourth player to join a Premier League club for at least £100m this summer, following Morgan Rogers' £117m move to Chelsea, Bradley Barcola's £123m switch to Liverpool and Anderson's £116m transfer to City.
City's substantial investment follows a major overhaul of Maresca's midfield.
Tijjani Reijnders joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah for £52m, Rodri moved to Barcelona for £65m and Nico Gonzalez completed a £52m switch to Newcastle United.
Bernardo Silva also departed earlier in the summer before joining Real Madrid as a free agent.
Elsewhere, City sold Savio to Tottenham for £75m, while they are due to receive another £60m from Spurs next summer when Omar Marmoush's loan move becomes permanent.
City have responded by investing heavily in replacements. They signed 18-year-old midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi from Lille for £86m and Brazilian winger Allan Elias for £34m, while winger Jeremy Monga and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli arrived for more modest fees.
Their spending could increase further, with Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye set to join after the clubs agreed a deal worth up to £65m.
Chelsea had initially hoped to keep Fernandez, but the midfielder has reportedly been pushing for a departure since March and remained determined to leave.
The Argentine had been targeting a move to Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants ultimately released a statement ruling out an offer.
Fernandez's £125m departure would become the second-biggest sale in Chelsea's history, behind Eden Hazard's transfer to Real Madrid in 2019.
It also puts Chelsea on course to establish a Premier League record for player-sale income in a single transfer window.
The Fernandez deal, combined with Nicolas Jackson's £65m move to Aston Villa and Liam Delap's £50m transfer to Nottingham Forest, means Chelsea's summer sales are expected to generate more than £400m.
That would comfortably surpass the club's previous record of approximately £300m, set last season.
Chelsea's significant squad reduction comes after a disappointing campaign in which they finished 10th in the Premier League, failed to win a trophy and missed out on European qualification.
The departure of Fernandez represents one of the biggest moves of the summer and gives Maresca another major piece of his Manchester City rebuild ahead of the new season.
