Real Madrid Open Disciplinary Proceedings Against Raul Asencio After Drink-Driving Conviction

Real Madrid Open Disciplinary Proceedings Against Raul Asencio After Drink-Driving Conviction

Real Madrid have opened disciplinary proceedings against defender Raul Asencio following his drink-driving conviction last month, head coach Jose Mourinho confirmed on Thursday.

The 23-year-old centre-back was found to have been more than three times over the legal alcohol limit during an incident on August 16.

Asencio was subsequently convicted at a trial in San Bartolome de Tirajana, Gran Canaria. He was fined €14,400 ($16,700) and had his driving licence suspended for eight months.

Mourinho: Real Madrid Players Represent Club at All Times

Mourinho praised Asencio's professionalism on the training ground but stressed that representing Real Madrid carries responsibilities away from football.

"He's a model professional. When he was fit, no one trained as hard as him," Mourinho said.

The Portuguese coach added that Asencio has continued to demonstrate his commitment while recovering from injury, regularly arriving early and leaving training late.

However, Mourinho made clear that the defender's conduct away from the pitch was a serious concern.

"But a Real Madrid player remains so 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 12 months a year," he said.

"Everything you do outside the pitch represents Real Madrid and could affect the club's prestige.

"I'm not happy. Everyone makes mistakes but when they pile up, it's not the same."

Asencio Also Facing Separate Court Case

Asencio is also due to appear in court in Gran Canaria this week in a separate case involving the alleged non-consensual sharing of a sexual video dating back to 2023.

Spanish media have reported that Asencio expects to be cleared if the two young women who were filmed, aged 16 and 18 at the time, formally forgive him.

Three former Real Madrid reserve players are also on trial over allegations that they recorded and distributed the video.

The trial is scheduled to take place on September 3, 4 and 7.

Asencio Yet to Feature Under Mourinho

Asencio has not been included in a matchday squad since Mourinho took charge of Real Madrid after suffering a hamstring injury in July.

The defender had, however, featured regularly for the Spanish giants during the previous two seasons.

With disciplinary proceedings now underway, Real Madrid will determine whether further action is required following Asencio's drink-driving conviction.
