Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has questioned the consistency of Premier League touchline rules after being booked for leaving his technical area during last week's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.
Jaissle was repeatedly reminded by the fourth official to remain inside his technical area at St James' Park before referee Rob Jones showed him a yellow card in the 70th minute for stepping outside again.
Following the match, the Newcastle boss questioned the purpose of the rule when a manager is simply encouraging and communicating with his players.
"I hope I don't need to adapt," Jaissle said. "I was really clear that I was disappointed."
The 38-year-old argued that briefly stepping outside the technical area while positively supporting his team should not necessarily warrant a caution.
"If you're 20cm outside your box and you encourage and support your own team in a positive way, an emotional way, I'm not sure if that's then a yellow card," he said.
Jaissle also appeared to question whether the rule is being applied consistently across the Premier League, pointing to the behaviour of other managers on the touchline.
Asked whether he had seen other similarly animated coaches avoid punishment, Jaissle replied: "You can say so."
The German, who joined Newcastle from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli last month, is the only Premier League manager to have been cautioned during the opening weeks of the season.
Stricter guidelines on participant behaviour were introduced in 2023 through a charter agreed by the Premier League, Football Association, English Football League and Professional Game Referees. The regulations state that occupants must remain within their designated technical areas during matches.
Ahead of the new season, Premier League and refereeing officials also visited every top-flight club to brief managers on operational procedures and the laws of the game.
