Argentine star Lionel Messi continued his impressive form for Inter Miami during their match against visiting Nashville, which ended 2-2 early Sunday morning in Major League Soccer (MLS) action. Nashville took an early lead through Sam Surridge, who scored just four minutes after kickoff.
The hosts responded with an equalizer—an own goal—scored by Reed Baker-Whiting in the 19th minute.
Lionel Messi then put Inter Miami ahead with a magnificent goal in the 62nd minute, firing a precise shot from outside the penalty area. With this strike, the Argentine star brought his tally to 19 goals, taking sole possession of the top spot in the MLS scoring charts—one goal ahead of his closest rival, Croatian player Petar Musa of FC Dallas.
However, Sam Surridge struck in the dying moments, netting his second goal of the match and securing the equalizer for his team in the first minute of stoppage time.
Nashville leads the league's Eastern Conference standings with 54 points, holding a nine-point advantage over second-placed Inter Miami.
Inter Miami had been looking to avenge a heavy 4-1 defeat suffered against Nashville in their previous encounter on August 15.
Nashville had also previously eliminated Inter Miami from the CONCACAF Champions Cup earlier this season.
