Was the Brazilian star treated unfairly?
Neymar, the Santos star, launched a sharp attack on Bahia player Rodrigo Nestor following his sending-off during their match early Sunday, as part of the 32nd round of the Brazilian League.
Neymar was sent off after placing his hand over his mouth while speaking to Rodrigo Nestor in the center circle, just before the start of the second half.
At that moment, Nestor went straight to the referee to report Neymar’s actions. Before play could resume, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) called the official over to review the footage.
Consequently, the referee issued a straight red card to Neymar, deeming the forward’s behavior to fall under what is known as the "Vinícius Júnior Law," which is currently in effect in the Brazilian League.
Writing on his Instagram account, Neymar stated: "I’m not one to talk much about what happens on the pitch, but what Nestor did to me is extremely dangerous; he exploited a law designed to combat racism for his own gain."
He added: "I am deeply saddened because he acted in a completely dishonest manner. In an interview, he claimed he couldn't repeat what I said because children might be watching—but come on, man, he pretended to be assaulted! I kicked the ball toward his waist area, yet he clutched his face. What kind of example is he trying to set? He talks about upbringing and morals—well, brother, I was raised well, too. And one more thing: I am a man." Neymar continued: "What I did was wrong. Whoever established this rule needs to be careful, because it can lead to dishonest behavior—which is exactly what happened to me. I did something foolish, didn't I? I gave a fool the chance to grab the spotlight. Thank you, Nestor; I’ll go to sleep with a clear conscience. As for you—given your dishonest conduct—you won’t be sleeping with an easy mind; no, you certainly won’t!"
