Harry Kane Favourite for Ballon d'Or as Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe Challenge

England captain Harry Kane is the leading contender to win the 2026 Ballon d'Or, but Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe remain firmly in contention ahead of Monday's ceremony in London.

The 70th edition of football's most prestigious individual award will be held in England for the first time, honouring inaugural winner Stanley Matthews. Kane could become the first Englishman to claim the prize in 25 years.

The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker enjoyed an extraordinary campaign, scoring 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country. His remarkable form helped Bayern secure a domestic league and cup double, while England reached the World Cup semifinals.

However, semifinal defeats in both the Champions League and World Cup could complicate Kane's bid for the award.

"I'd love to be able to achieve something like that. It would be a massive milestone in my career," Kane said.

The England captain also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the result, admitting that the secrecy adds to the tension for players and their families.

"I think my wife would prefer to know and my family … it's very stressful for everyone," he added.

"I can see why they don't tell people. They want everyone to go, all the big names, and there will be more people watching it if they don't know."

Yamal Confident of Ballon d'Or Success

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is determined to go one better after finishing runner-up to Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele last year.

The 19-year-old has established himself among football's brightest talents, although a hamstring injury brought his club season to a premature end.

Despite being part of Spain's World Cup-winning squad, Yamal was overshadowed by his teammates in a tournament defined by collective excellence. Barcelona colleagues Rodri and Pau Cubarsi claimed the tournament's best player and best young player awards, respectively.

Nevertheless, Yamal remains confident that his achievements deserve recognition.

"For me, Mbappe and me, we're the two best players in the world," he said last month.

"I honestly think that, as the best in the world, maybe there are two of us, and this year I would deserve it because of what I've won."

Mbappe Banks on Historic Goalscoring Achievements

Kylian Mbappe enters the Ballon d'Or race with an exceptional individual record, despite ending the campaign without major silverware for Real Madrid or France.

The 27-year-old finished as the leading goalscorer in LaLiga, the Champions League and the World Cup, although he failed to win any of those competitions.

His 10 goals at the World Cup also took his overall tally to 22, making him the competition's all-time leading scorer.

"Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," Mbappe said.

When asked who deserved his vote, the French forward delivered a confident response.

"Who am I voting for? Myself."

How the Ballon d'Or Winner Is Decided

The Ballon d'Or is determined by votes from football journalists representing the top 100 nations in FIFA's world rankings.

Each journalist selects 10 players from a 30-man shortlist, awarding points on a sliding scale from 15 for their first choice down to one for their tenth.

The player accumulating the highest total is crowned the winner.

Although the award does not include direct prize money, winning the Ballon d'Or can trigger substantial performance bonuses from clubs and sponsors while significantly increasing a player's commercial value.

Putellas Leads Women's Ballon d'Or Race

In the women's category, Spanish midfielder Alexia Putellas is the favourite to claim her third Ballon d'Or after previously winning in 2021 and 2022.

Her potential victory would end compatriot Aitana Bonmati's three-year dominance of the award following an injury-disrupted campaign.

Putellas played an influential role in Barcelona's Champions League triumph last season before completing a move to London City Lionesses.

Her strongest challenger is former Barcelona teammate Ewa Pajor, whose 11 Champions League goals proved instrumental in the Catalan club's European success.

With Kane, Yamal and Mbappe presenting compelling but contrasting cases, the men's award remains difficult to predict. Kane's extraordinary goalscoring record and domestic success give him a strong advantage, but Yamal's international triumph and Mbappe's historic individual achievements ensure Monday's ceremony could deliver a surprise.
